What?

There was an item in the agenda for the Council meeting of March 13, 2007 that is being kept hush, hush. The Council went into executive session, behind closed doors, on "prospective litigation after formal written demand - C-Port 2, LLC, et al vs. Lafourche Parish, et al." The Council went into this session without its counsel in attendance. Yet, counsel for the prospective plaintiffs were permitted into the session. Very odd, but not illegal, from what I know.

After the session, the Council came out and adopted a resolution authorizing the President to refund the amounts claimed due. That's it!

But, can anyone tell me what this is about? I hear that it concerns a demand for the refund of overpaid taxes. No suit has been filed, so we can't read it in the Clerk of Court's Office. But, what taxes? What fund is the refund coming from? How much money is involved?

What's going on? You see, this is the kind of crap that gets you in trouble. It is likely all on the up and up, but it certainly looks shady.

I overheard at another parish public meeting that the refund was to a Chouest company. Regardless, why the secrecy and the lack of legal representation?

Right. It's C-Port 2 and Golden Motors. And I have nothing against them being refunded taxes they didn't owe. Those guys, and other businesses in the 10th Ward, pay their share. Its the manner the Council handled it I take issue with.

Comments, the quality of yours, are always welcomed.

But, then, so is "Get the rope!"

Since it is settled, a public request of the letters may be in order? It may clear some things up if the councilman don't want to talk. maybe CAM or the ethics board should take a look.
